He’d done himself no favors entering the bathroom while Leah showered, the image of her figure behind the curtain, her underthings laid on the counter, now etched in his head. He’d retreated to the living room afterward and made a vain attempt to cool down, yet here she was, soft and warm, and it all came back up again.

She had no idea how she affected him, and he adored that clearness of conscience the most. But that same naiveté gave him his greatest amount of guilt. She wasn’t a child. She made her own choices and had developed whatever feelings she had on her own. But as the teacher, the one in authority, he should have handled this better.

Words that tasted sour in his mouth. He’d failed completely where she was concerned, and worse, he would fail again.

He didn’t know how he’d stand in front of her class and give instruction without thinking of her like this. He didn’t know how he’d be able to grade her work fairly either, except to not grade it at all. And though he would hate to see her go back to the dorms tomorrow, he needed the break to think this out and make some decisions.

The work on the curriculum needed completing. Though that removed her reason for coming over, dragging it out looked worse. Above all else, he had to protect her from any fallout and yet guard the bond they’d formed and the idea this could go somewhere greater if he could get past the awkwardness of it.

This wasn’t a fling, not some overnight tryst or meaningless casual affair. He’d been around guys who’d had those, and what he felt for Leah was so much greater than that.

At the same time, as she’d said, no one looking in from the outside would see it that way. They wouldn’t understand why she’d stayed with him again tonight or see past his attraction for her to the way she filled the hole in his heart. His actions over the next few weeks would either sustain what they’d formed or destroy them, and he couldn’t bear causing her any pain.

Her breaths warmed a place on his chest, each puff adding tremendous weight to his already overburdened shoulders. But he kept it to himself, as unwilling to let her go as ever.
